by Gerry
(Florida)
QuestionWE HAVE AN ABOVE GROUND POOL. IT HOLDS 7,700 GALLONS OF WATER. IT'S OUR FIRST POOL. WE NEED TO KNOW THE AMOUNTS ON ALL THE CHEMICALS TO START IT UP AND MAINTENANCE. THE SHOCK, PH, CHLORINATING TABS? Thanks for the question Gerry
Not to worry because you're in the right place to get all your questions answered.
Having a pool is easy when you have the right information and someone who has first-hand knowledge on taking care of hundreds of home and commercial pools.
Because of the scope of your question it would be time ineffective in telling you everything you need to do in order to get your pool up and running, along with all that needs to be done on a weekly basis.
So I'm going to give you the links to the pages you need to get going.
But first:
You need to get a good pool test kit. I strongly encourage you to get a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 kit.
It's the best on the market and the one most pool professional use.

Pool Water Testing
You can go to this page for your start up:
Pool Start Up
Go to this page for links to chlorine, cyanuric acid levels, pH levels, alkalinity, and calcium hardness:
Swimming Pool Chemistry
And this one for chlorine shock:
Pool Shock
The chlorine and shock pages show how much you need to shock your pool, along with the reasons why and when you need to shock.
This page can give you a good estimate on what to expect for maintenance cost:
Pool Maintenance Cost
Everything about chlorine tabs:
Chlorine Tablets
Pool Chlorine Tablets
Be sure to read the pages on the different types of chlorine:
Calcium Hypochlorite
Sodium Hypochlorite
Call your local water company and ask them the hardness of the water.
If it's about 150ppm, or pretty close to it, I'd recommend using liquid chlorine.
If you want good pool water right now, you can check into a local pool water delivery service:
Pool Water Delivery
I'm sure there's companies in Florida that have this service.
Also check out the pages about pool algae and all related links, starting with these:
Swimming Pool Algae
Green Pool Water
If you have any specific questions concerning the maintenance of your pool, just email back and I'll be glad to help.
Best of luck with your pool and have fun this swimming season
