Back Flow Or Burping Pump

by Douglas

My Jacuzzi Lazer 192 on shut down back flows- burps, back from the pump to the skimmer basket and blast the lid off, about 12 -18 inches in the air, on shut down only.

I have replaced postion valve on sand filter and it does the same, tighten all fittings and replaced O rings.

Wasn't doing this on first start up just started.

Help please. Thank you.

Thanks for the question Douglas

First I'll direct your attention to this post:

Pool Strainer Overflows..Lid Blows Off..

Check any vacuum hose segments to see if they're cracked and/or sucking air. You can hear the hissing sounds. Open the air bleeder valve on top of the filter until the air stops and water comes out.

Many pools have an inline check valve. This is on the suction side of the pump to keep it primed and prevents backflow to the pool. If the valve is bad or has failed it will allow air back into the filter pump housing causing the filter basket and perhaps the skimmer lid to pop off.

Also check for a sticking the skimmer weir. This forms a vortex in the skimmer and will allow air back into the system and the pump may pose its prime. Be sure the water level is 1/3 - 1/2 up from the bottom of the skimmer.

You can try this as well. Close the return line valve and, if you hae a sand filter put it in TEST MODE, if you can, when you clean the pump basket. This will help keep the prime in the pump housing. This technique may work if you have a check valve that's not working.

Look over these tips and check out the link above and let me know how it turns out for you.

Best of luck and have a great Summer

AIR AND BLOW BACK..LOSS OF SUCTION..

by Fergus Wrinn
(Bryson Qe. Canada)

My filter is creating air in the chamber. When I stop the pump for any reason I get back pressure at the skimmer also when I attach the creepy-crawler it will only clean for a while as the chamber builds up more air inside and less suction.

What is my problem?

Thanks for the question Fergus

I would first direct you to this link to see if anything matches:

Above Ground Swimming Pool Losing Water..Running Sand Filter System..

You could have a suction/return side leak in the pipes/plumbing. You have intake lines going to the filter, and return lines going back to the pool. If you have a crack in the return line you'll be losing water.

If it's an air leak in the intake line, you'll be losing suction.

Possible sources:

*The pump (clogged or broken impeller and/or basket)

*Bad or old pump lid o-ring

*Loose pump lid

*Fittings at the pump caused by running the pump dry

*Pump seal

*The skimmer(s) or plumbing between the pump and the skimmer

*Cracked or broken plumbing underground

You can use a grease-pen and measure the amount of water in the pool. If you lose more than 1/4 inch of water in a 24 hr. period, you might have a leak. That will require a leak detection company to fix.

Pool Pump Won't Circulate Water..No Prime

by Theresa
(Gilbert, AZ)

My pool pump will turn on, but I can't get it to circulate the water. I have tried changing out the O-ring around the filter basket, and while that used to do the trick, it doesn't seem to be working now.

What should I be looking for to trouble shoot?

Thanks for the question Theresa

Good to have a question from someone in Arizona. I had a couple of pools on my route in Gilbert. Heard it was about 108 degrees today. Good ole' days. Anyway...

I will assume that you mean the pump pot won't fill with water. The motor is on, but there's no water going through the system. It is normal for a pump to take a few seconds, up to a minute or two to prime up.

In extreme cases, it might be up to five minutes. This is bad as a pump that's not pushing through water can burn up. You can take the pump lid off and fill the pot with a bucket of water. Quickly secure the lid and start the pump motor up.

Be sure to release the air in the filter through the pressure release valve.

Clean out the strainer basket and skimmer basket.

You may have a dirty or clogged filter, a blocked return line, or a valve that is shut off or partially shut.

The pump's impeller might be clogged with debris.

Turn off the pump and the main breaker box to the pump.

Remove the pump basket and check the impeller by sticking your fingers into the suction hole found in the pump strainer housing.

If the seal is broken it needs to be replaced.

Keep the water level between 1/3 - 1/2 up from the bottom of the skimmer.

Clogged suction line.
