Can Pool Chlorine Harm My Hair & Darken My Skin..Swimming Pool

by Agualia
(Brazil)

Yesterday I went to swim after almost 1 year.

After I got up...took my shower and found my hair to be rougher than usual.

My hair is usually quite silky but now even conditioner after shampoo is not working.

My hair feels quite rough.

Does the pool chlorine in the water have anything to do with it or is it the heat in my country (about 30 degrees Celsius) that is causing this?

I also heard that this swimming pool chlorine can cause darkening of the skin...is this true?

Thanks for your question Agualia

Swimming pool chlorine, and other chemicals used to balance swimming pools, can affect your hair.

If the pool chlorine level is up too high or the other chemicals are out of balance, your hair might feel a bit rough and your skin might be itchy or red.

Talk to the pool operator and see if the pool chemicals are in balance.

You can go to these links to see what the balance should be:

Swimming Pool Tips

You can invest in a well fitted swim cap, anti-chlorine soap, shampoo, and conditioner if the issue persists.

Also limit the amount of time you're in the swimming pool if the chemicals are not properly balanced.

Talk to the pool operator, or his supervisor, to see what they can do or what the issues are, if any.

Pool chlorine should be between 1.5ppm - 3.5ppm for residential pools and 3.5ppm - 4.5ppm for commercial swimming pools.
