Clean Fingers Of DE Filters

by Lori
(Clear Lake MN U.S.)

Question #1 How often do you need to replace the fingers that hang down in the DE filter?

Question #2 Is it possible for a fine white film to build up on bottom of pool from the DE when recharging the filter, if so what is wrong with the filter?

Thanks for the question Lori

Under normal use and good weekly maintenance, the actual DE filter can last up to 25 years.

You should expect the DE grids or fingers to last at minimum 4 - 5 years. This is with proper maintenance and cleaning.

Some may last less because of overuse or not using enough DE, too strong a pump (this can tear the grinds or fingers), not cleaning or infrequent back washing, putting DE straight into the skimmer (not first making a slurry) etc...

There could be many reasons why DE is going back into the pool after you recharge the filter.

This is a very common problem with DE filters.

Here are some posts to look over:

WHY AM I GETTING DE BACK IN THE POOL?

As you can see lots of people have this problem.

Some reasons for DE returning to the pool are:

Torn filter grids/fingers - Remember to check the end of the grid.

Broken manifold

Broken and/or missing air relief strainer

If you're having DE returning to the pool, please look over the above posts.
