Cost of Maintaining an Indoor Swimming Pool in Western New York

by Amie
(South of Buffalo, NY)

We are very interested in this home and would like to know an approx annual cost of pool/pool room maintenance/ownership. The original owners no longer own the home and the current owner did not live in the home.

I can't seem to find a chart on the web anywhere.

I know the pool room is 27x48 feet. I do not know the size of the actual pool yet or what type of filtration/dehumidication/heating systems are in the space. I will get that information tomorrow.

Thanks for the question Amie

Indoor pools are actually easier to take care of and are chemically less expensive than an outdoor pool.

There's no worry about the heat, acid rain, organic matter in the pool (grass clippings, dead leaves, animals, etc...) It's in a very controlled environment.

For a regular pool with regular use (say a family a four that uses it 3 Xs per week) your chemical use should be about $15 per month. Not much labor because no shouldn't be much dirt in the pool. No windstorms equals less dirt.

Consider the back washing as well. Less dirt means the filter won't get as dirty. You'll save on the water bill as well. How much?

A gallon of water is about 2 cents. Let's use regular tap water as your fill water.

200 gallons per back wash, once per month, would equal $4 per month. Add on another $1 for splash out, that's $5.

5 X 12 months = $60 per year, just for back washing. With an indoor pool you can probably 1/2 that.

Here's a good post about heating an indoor pool:

Pool Question..Indoor Heater

Remember that an having an indoor pool, although pretty cool, does come with a price, if you're not careful. This has to do with dehumidification, fresh air flow, and exhaust. These are crucial because if you don't have them you're going to have a huge problem later on.

The above link goes into much detail about that, along with this page:

This one about a pool heater:

I Have A Hayward Electric Heater..What Size New Heater Do I Need?

Due to different electrical and gas rates through the country, it would be hard to give you an exact number for heating the pool room and the pool.

Running the pool motor:

For a 12 hour day, for a month, at $.10 per kilowatt hour, is $1.45.

If you run the filter for 6 - 8 hours per day at this rate, you're looking at around 70 cents per day.

So, a rough monthly estimate:

Chemicals - $15

Electricity - $20 (pump motor)

Water - $30

Gas/Electricity to heat the pool - $30

Gas/Electricity for fresh air/exhaust/dehumidification - $30

Total monthly cost - $125

Total yearly cost - $1500

These numbers are not exact and can change due to your comfort level, size of the room, insulation, weather, etc... If you like the room or pool a bit warmer, you're going to use more gas and/or electricity.

Also take into consideration if there's an exhaust problem. Condensation can build up quickly and cause mold in places that you didn't even knew existed. This will be another added expense.
