Do I Have Sand Filter Or Pump Problems?

The filter runs well on backwash after many repairs (new sand and laterals, new multi-port top...it was leaking)

But has very little water (low flow?) going back to pool on filter.

Pump is noisy and the water is green since the pump has been broken since we opened in late April!

Have been shocking and brushing, but filter has not worked at all.

Could it be the pump?

The low flow has been going on for a while. We thought it was the filter, but all past leaks on filter have been repaired and still hardly any flow.

No air bubbles, just no circulation.

It is a 24'round above ground pool. We have had it for 3 years.

19" sand filter. 1 HP pump.

Worked well for 2 seasons, 3rd laterals broke.

Now here we are.

Thank you

Thanks for the question

If the filter is relatively new and the sand and laterals have been replaced, and there's no sand going back into the pool, you do probably have low suction, or a suction side leak somewhere.

There could be many reasons why there's no water going into the pump pot.

Here are some very good posts that are similar to your problem. They have many troubleshooting tips and things to look for:

The next post is about a suction side leak:

This post is about low skimmer suction and general suction side issues:

How Do I Fix Low Skimmer Suction?

Here are some general things you'll want to look at:

Be sure the water level is between 1/3 - 1/2 up from the bottom of the skimmer. Water level below the skimmer and your system will draw in air.

Check the pressure gauge. High pressure means a clog somewhere or a blocked filter. Low pressure means a suction side blockage, an air leak, or pump problem.

If air bubbles are coming out of the returns, it could be a suction side issue. One of the more common places for this to happen is the pump lid.

Be sure it's seated correctly and the gasket is in good shape.

If you have a weir for the skimmer, be sure it's working properly.

Skimmer basket should be clean.

Clogged pump motor impeller.

Pump motor basket needs cleaning.

This, along with the above posts will give you much information on your low water and pressure problems.
