Grime & Grease On Plastic Chairs

by Leo Sciarappa
(Venice, FL)

Others at the Condo Complex claim we should clean our plastic chairs by putting them in the swimming pool. I just think there must be too much grime, grease, and other stuff on them that can't be good for the pH.

Is it OK to clean them by putting them in the pool?

Thanks for the question Leo

There are three things that we use at the YMCA pool to clean our white plastic chairs:

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers

Diluted Clorox

Any good car soap

If you throw them in the pool I think all you'll have are wet chairs. If the chlorine level is kept between 1.5 - 3.5ppm, there's really not enough cleaning properties to properly get the chairs clean. It may kill the algae or bacteria, but you'll still need to actually scrub them down a little.

Don't use anything abrasive. It will scratch the surface and make the chairs more susceptible to mold and bacteria growth.

The only way I found to get grime or grease off chairs is to either either power wash them or give them a good scrubbing.

If they're sun faded you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get some paint to brighten them up.

It might not hurt the chemicals to throw the chairs in the pool, but it won't help.

Hope this helps

Robert
