DE Filter Not Cleaning Off During Backwash
by: Chimene (Panama Central America )

I have a Hayward DE filter. My pool is continuously green. I've tried to backwash it to clean off the filters but I do not see any of the black/green DE in the spy glass.

I disassembled the filter and the filters were filthy as I expected. I reassembled and started the pump. My beginning pressure is always 18psi. In two days time it's now at 30psi. I tried backwashing again today and no luck. The gunk is not being washed from the filter.

Now I have to disassemble the filter again and clean it off. Fourth time this year. Any recommendations as to what might be wrong?

Many thanks

Thanks for the question Chimene

Backwashing and filtering won't get rid of green water or an algae bloom. It's only part of the solution. The filter will clog up pretty quickly when there's lots of algae. We need to find the reason why your pool is always green.

I'd like to have your complete chemical readings:

Chlorine, CYA (cyanuric acid/stabilizer), pH, Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, and Metals (iron and copper). It makes troubleshooting much easier and the process of clearing up your pool will go much faster.

You can get this done at your local pool store or use a good test kit. I use and recommend a Taylor DPD K-2006 kit.

Green Problem Pool
by: Anonymous

I have been having problems with a green pool. I backwashed last week when the pressure was NOT high, now the pressure is up in the 30's.

Pool water was clear, but bottom of pool was dirty, I brushed bottom and pool is now very cloudy, with the high pressure? What in the world am I doing wrong?
