How Do I Protect My Hair From Chlorine Swimming Pool Water?

by Brenda
(Tulsa, OK)

What are some good tips for me to not get my hair damaged and to protect it from a chlorine swimming pool? And no I cannot get my hair wet before going to a swimming pool because I have dry land.

My second question is if my hair does get damaged how do I return it back to normal? I'm in the pool like 6 days a week (I do race swimming) so I don't just swim what you might call "for recreation".

Please help...

Thanks for your question Brenda

Sorry, I'm not a hairdresser, and I don't have a clue as to what "dry land" is, but I can tell you one of the best ways to protect your hair from the swimming pool chlorine and other pool chemicals is to get a well fitted swim cap. They are inexpensive and can protect your hair from the pool chemicals.

Also, if you feel uncomfortable wearing a swim cap, I would highly recommend anti-chlorine soap, shampoo, and conditioner. You can find these online or maybe at your local pool supply store.

As for your 2nd question, the best person to talk to is your hairdresser. I couldn't tell you the best way to fix damaged hair. I'm the pool guy, not the hair guy.

Hope this helps

Robert

First off a swim cap is a good idea for anyone doing race swimming simply to cut down on resistance to the water. Look at the Olympic swimmers.

As far as the pool chlorine in the water is concerned, most city water has a .5 residual chlorine content out of the tap, and as long as your chlorine is within a normal range of 1.0 - 2.0 it should not hurt your hair.
