How Do You Clean A Salt Water Cell?
by Tina
Can you clean your salt water cell?
My control box keeps saying check cell.
If you can clean it, what can be used?
Thanks for the question Tina
I'll tell you what I've done for the YMCA salt cells. This goes for both the pool and the hot tub. It works every time, but you need to be careful because you're going to be using muriatic acid.
Use a 4:1 mix of water and acid. I use 2 gallons of water and 1/2 gallon of acid.
Rinse the cell with clean water. Get a soft bristle brush and gently remove larger particles and debris from inside the chlorinator cell.
Call you local pool store and see if they have any salt cell plugs. You can plug up one end of the cell and fill the other end with the mixture of water and acid.
Allow this to sit for about 5 minutes. It will probably start to bubble up a little bit. This means the acid is eating away the salt and calcium inside the cell.
Pour it out and rinse the salt cell with clean water.
It's good to go.
Remember to use rubber gloves, goggles, and long sleeve shirt and pants. Clothes that you wouldn't mind if they get stained.
If the acid gets on the clothes it will bleach it out.
