How Long Can Shocking Chlorine Keep In Pool Water?

by Lin
(Auckland New Zealand)

Question about using swimming pool chlorine and shock:

Can I just do shocking (using Calcium Hypochlorite or Sodium Hypochlorite)once two weeks to my pool without using any other chlorine daily in summer? Because no people use the pool at the moment.

I just want the pool water to be OK.

Thanks for the question Lin

First I would encourage you to get a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 pool water test kit. It's the best on the market and the most accurate.

Pool Water Testing Kit..Balance..Chemistry

You pool water chemistry needs to be tested twice per week in the Summer and one time per week in the Winter, if you don't close the pool.

You want to keep the chlorine level between 1.5ppm - 3.5ppm and manually dose the pool with chlorine when it needs it.

Shocking is good for the pool, but only when the pool needs it.

The FAS-DPD test kit has a test for when you should shock the pool, it's called the "chloramine test". This is when the chlorine is killing the organic matter in the pool, leaves, grass clippings, swimmer waste such as sweat, urine, things like that.

The chloramine level will rise when there's too much organic matter in the pool and not enough chlorine. When the chloramine level gets above 0.5ppm for 3 consecutive days, then it's time to shock the pool.

To just shock the pool and leave it for a couple of weeks without testing it would be dangerous and possibly costly. The pool water can turn green with algae, and then you'll be spending more to clear that up.

Hope this helps and have a great Summer

Robert
