How Long Do I Need To Wait Before Swimming After Adding Pool Chemicals

by Lois

How long should I wait to go swimming after adding any of my swimming pool chemicals. I've heard different stories from different people.

I've heard you can swim immediately, but some people say to wait 15 - 30 minutes, and some say even longer, like 10 - 12 hours.

I want to be safe, so here it goes:

1. Pool Chlorine
2. Muriatic Acid/Pool
3. Sodium Bibarbonate
4. Soda Ash/pH Up
5. Calcium Hardness Increaser/Raise
6. Alkalinity Increase/Decreaser
7. Any kinds of Pool Algaecides
8. Pool water pH increaser/decrease

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your question Lois.

Most pool owners want a complete run-down about this topic. Go to Clear Blue Pool eBook for much more information. It's the best on the internet and will answer all of your question in detail.

This is a popular question so here it goes once again. To increase your swimming pool total alkalinity level you can use sodium bicarbonate which is nothing more than baking soda. It's safe to swim immediately after adding but you'll want to see this link on how to raise your pool alkalinity and testing alkalinity in pool water.

Swimming Pool Alkalinity

To increase calcium hardness you'll need calcium chloride.

Calcium Hardness

You can swim 2 hours after adding, but if you can, allow for one full turn-over of the water. this is mainly is you're making an adjustment to the pool water. A turn-over is a full and complete filtration of all of the swimming pool water.

A pool shock is a different story. It's not necessarily a time factor but when the pool chlorine level gets down to a safe level, about 1.5ppm - 3.5ppm. The swimming pool chlorine level normally takes a few days to reach a safe level. If you need it faster you can use a product called Thiosulphate which is a pool chlorine neutralizer.

You can get this at any pool supply store. For other chemicals a 2 hour wait should be fine but for the best water quality, one complete turn-over. Some people say 30 minutes, but I've always error on the side of caution.

If you pour muriatic acid in the pool and swim within 10 - 15 minutes you might get a "hot spot" of acid that can burn you.

How Long Do You Need To Wait To Swim After Adding pH Minus..Acid

by Larry
(Washington DC)

I added some pH minus, I think it's called muriatic acid, to lower my swimming pool pH level.

I was wondering how long should I wait before I let my family go swimming after adding a pH minus or pool acid.

Good question Larry

I would suggest a good 2 hour wait before you go swimming again. This will allow the muriatic acid to do it's job.

Your swimming pool might increase in pH naturally as more people swim in it. This water movement and splashing around is called aeration and is used as one method of raising a pool's pH level.

Some might say you can go swimming within 15 - 20 minutes after adding any chemicals, but it's better to stay safe. A 2 hour wait is fine after adding any pool chemicals.

How Long Does Can We Swim After Adding Muriatic Acid To Lower The pH Level?

by James
(Lancaster, PA)

We added muriatic acid to our pool to lower the swimming pool pH level. I need to know how long after we added it to swim.

Thanks for your question James

Technically you can swim within 30 min. if your pool pump is on and the water is circulating properly. If your pump is off you will lower the total alkalinity (TA), not the swimming pool pH level because acid is heavier than water and will "sink" to the deep end without effecting pool pH level very much.

Swimming Pool Alkalinity..Adjusting Your Pool Chemistry..Water Balance

I always suggest to wait for one complete turn-over of your pool water. That's normally about 10 hours.

Muriatic acid is toxic and will etch everything it touches so wear gloves, protective goggles, and old clothing.

You can "walk" the acid around the pools perimeter straight from the bottle or to avoid any splashing, you can get a bucket filled 1/2 with pool water, then add the muriatic acid.

Add acid to water and never the other way around!

You can add up to 1/4 gallon muriatic acid for a 20,000 gallon pool everyday until the pool pH level is between 7.6ppm - 7.8ppm. Check your total alkalinity and keep between 80 and 100ppm.
