How Much Baking Soda To Raise The pH Pool Level?

by James

How many lbs. of baking soda do I need to add to my 24ft around 5ft deep swimming pool to raise the pH level?

It is at 0 right now says the test.

Thanks for the question James

For a 24X5 above ground pool, you looking at about 13,500 gallons. I will assume you have an above ground pool.

First, I would encourage you to test the pH level again and be sure it's 0ppm. I use a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 pool test kit. This will give you the most accurate readings.

The pH of muriatic acid is approx. 4.5ppm. You might not be testing your pool correctly.

Be sure you're testing properly with the right pool tester. Once this is done you can email back and give the pH level.

Thanks

Robert

My bad. The pH level is 1.5, just barley showing red at all in the test.

It's a 24ft around 5 ft deep above ground pool and holds 11,875 gallons says the math on how you add it up.

We put 3 bags of shock in today to get the chlorine level correct and we have a 12lb bag of baking soda.

How much do you we need to put in it?

I'll test it tomorrow morning and give you a exact reading of the pH.

Thanks for the follow up Jamie

I'm sorry, but I'm having a difficult time with the 1.5 pH level. As I wrote before, muriatic acid has a pH level of 4.5.

According to your reply, you have a pH level 4Xs lower than muriatic acid.

I'm wondering if your pool test kit is bad. Are you using the yellow OTO kit? Test strips? Are you sure you're testing it correctly? Have your test chemicals gone bad?

If you're unsure, you can go to your local pool store and have them test the water.

3 bags of shock is good. Allow for one complete turnover of the water, probably about 8 hours, then retest. Always make adjustments at night. This way the sun and heat won't eat up any chlorine.

Test for cyanuric acid (CYA). This is the stabilizer for your chlorine. You can shock with Dichlor. This has the CYA in it.

For every 10ppm of chlorine added by Dichlor it will raise your CYA by 9ppm.

Trichlor (chlorine tabs). For every 10ppm of chlorine, you'll also add 6ppm of CYA.

Look this over and let me know what your readings are. Here are the links to my pH pages:

Hope this helps and good luck with your pool.
