Low Jet Output

by Coleen

After adding the DE to the skimmer, 3 to 4 hours later, the water pressure in the pool jets is gone. The jets we pushing out water at the correct pressure earlier, but now after the pump running overnight. The water pressure coming out of both jets is almost nil.

He as already cleaned the filter of DE and this is the second time this has happened.

What causes low jet pressure?

Thanks for the question Coleen

Low pressure is a common issue with DE filters. Here are some troubleshooting tips and things to look over and if you have air going into the system:

DE Filter..Low Pressure And No Suction At Skimmer

Little To No psi

For Jandy valves, the O-ring around the valve stem could be leaking air.

Check the pump lid O-ring and replace it if it's cracked or broken. Lube it with a silicone based lube.

Check the pump basket for holes or cracks. The pump impeller might be clogged up.

Low pressure normally indicates a block or suction leak:

- Skimmer basket should be empty and clean

- Clean the pump strainer basket

- Leak at the suction side of the pump

- Low water level. Keep it between 1/3 - 1/2 up from the bottom of the skimmer.

- Stuck skimmer weir (the little door in the throat of the skimmer) is stuck in the up position and must be freed

- Pump lid O-ring (as above)

- Pump impeller is clogged. Turn off the breaker, then the pump motor, remove the pump lid and the basket. Stick your fingers in the impeller and remove any debris.

With the filter pump running, slowly add about 1 pound of DE for every 10-12 square feet of filter space. Basically it's this: 48sf. DE filter = about 4 pounds of DE. (check your owner's manual for details and exact specifications)

I strongly urge you to get a DE scoop. This will give you the best measurement. If you have a DE scoop then 1 scoop = 1/2 lb of DE. By not putting enough DE back in the filter, you can damage the pool filter grids and cause poor filtration. Don't use a coffee can.

Low Return Pressure

by Jen Ruprecht
(Pittsburgh ,PA)

This could be my second summer with no pool! I have replaced pump and filter. I clean out cartridge have have great return pressure for about an hour. Then it is low. Pressure still reads 20 on the filter. It's lit the pump is trying but not enough water stays in . Then I noticted bursts of return pressure for about 10 seconds. Help!

Thank for the question Jen

Sometimes low return pressure means there's a suction side block. We need to be sure we're on the same page. The suction side is from the skimmer/bottom drain to the pump motor. The return side is from the pump motor, through the filter, and back to the pool. Here are some troubleshooting tips you can look at:

For Jandy valves, the O-ring around the valve stem could be leaking air.

Check the pump lid O-ring and replace it if it's cracked or broken. Lube it with a silicone based lube.

- Pump lid O-ring (as above)

- Pump impeller is clogged. Turn off the breaker, then the pump motor, remove the pump lid and the basket. Stick your fingers or smaller screwdriver in the impeller and remove any debris.
