My Pool Alkalinity
by Tim
(San Diego, CA)
I'm having a problem lowering my alkalinity. The guy in the pool store said to use acid. It lowered the alkalinity but now my pH is down around 7.
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?
Thanks
Tim
Thanks for your question Tim
Pool alkalinity is the opposite side of the same coin with your swimming pool pH level. When you raise one the other might be affected.
To lessen this there's a technique that I have used hundreds of times and it works perfectly.
To lower your total alkalinity you'll need baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Turn the pump motor off and while standing in the deep end add the bi-carb. Allow this to sit for 2 - 3 hours, then turn your pump motor on and allow the pool to fully circulate all the pool water, then re-test and make another adjustment if needed.

Do the same procedure for lowering your total alkalinity, just use acid.
Thanks for the question and good luck with your pool
