New Vinyl Liner & Salt Water Swimming Pool

by Kathy
(Oklahoma)

I am having a new liner put in my pool this morning.

It is a salt water pool.

After I fill the pool, do I add the salt and let the salt dissolve or do I add the salt and turn on the filter?

Thanks for the question Kathy

You want to make sure the filter is running whenever you make any adjustments to the pool, with the exception of adjusting the alkalinity.

If you just put the salt in the pool it will sink to the bottom and might cause staining of the liner. Salt is corrosive.

Probably the best way to add salt is to get a large bucket and dilute it in warm water. Then add it around the perimeter of the pool.

Sweep the bottom afterwards to break up any salt that may have found its way to the bottom.

This is what I've done at the YMCA salt pool when I have to add 35 bags of salt during our annual shutdown.

If you haven't already done so, these are some pages that you might want to check out:

Thanks so much for the reply. I have gotten mixed answers when I talk to my local pool companies but your answer is what I thought should happen!

Appreciate your help!
