Pool Sand Filter Problem..Water Out Of Backwash Pipe

by Josef

Just changed the sand in my filter. Everything looks ok. I did the backwash for a couple of min. then put the multi-port selector to filter and water was running out on the backwash pipe.

I don't think so that this is normal. The water level started to drop. Never lost any water from the pool before in the filtering mode.

Can you please help me to solve this problem?

Thanks for your question Josef

First I would ask you if you put the correct kind of sand in the filter. There are several types of pool sand and different size particles.

Next, be sure you didn't break any of the laterals when putting the new sand in the filter. If there's sand going back into the pool through the returns, you might have a broken lateral. You need to remove some or all of the sand, replace the lateral, then put the sand back into the filter.

Be sure you've used enough sand and you measure the amount of sand from the top of the filter to the top of the sand. Your owner's manual should have this information.

I would look at the Multi-Port Valve. When you put in a new setting, such as "BACKWASH" it should "click" in place. If it doesn't, the gaskets or O-rings probably need to be replaced.

It my experience, when you have water going back into the backwash hose or pipe, there's a leak or bad gasket and/or-O-ring.

For you water level dropping, I've answered this question here:

AIR AND BLOW BACK..LOSS OF SUCTION..

Above Ground Swimming Pool Losing Water..Running Sand Filter System..

Hope this helps and let me know how it turns out for you

Have a great Summer
