Replaced Lateral But Still Sand In Pool

by Tim Chapman
(West Greenwich, R.I.)

I had sand in my pool so removed top of split tank on the filter, removed sand, and found the end of one of the laterals in the sand.

Laterals were glued into main body so I glued a pvc cap over lateral so sand couldn't get in.

Replaced sand an reassembled filter.

No more sand coming out of returns.

Two weeks later sand coming out of one return.

Repeated process and found no apparent breaks in laterals.

All are pvc glued so WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

Thanks for the question Tim

There could be a few reasons why sand is still going into the pool.

Here are some other things you can consider:

1. Broken lateral and/or diffuser

2. Channeling

3. New sand

4. Old sand

5. Not doing the RINSE after back washing

6. Lateral impacted with sand and/or debris

7. Not having the correct measurement of freeboard

Sand, with good maintenance, can normally last anywhere from 5 - 10 years.

Here's a post to look over:

Swimming Pool Sand Filter..Pool Seems To Be Manufacturing Small Debris

If you do put new sand in be sure to put the correct number of pounds in and get the correct size sand for your filter.

The freeboard is the measurement from the top of the tank to the sand. You can call the sand filter manufacturer and get the correct measurements.

Sand filters are pretty straight forward. There's really nothing hidden and once the sand is out everything is pretty accessible.

Check the Multiport valve as well.

The spider gasket may have gone bad or is crusted up or the compression plate and compression spring might be going.

You can go to this link to check on that:

Multiport Valve Filter Setting Issue..Water Coming Out Of The Backwash Hose..

There's lots of good info. on troubleshooting the Multiport valve, what to look for, and how to replace it, if necessary.

Hope this helps and let me know how it turns out for you.
