Salt Water Chlorine Generator

by Mitch
(Seattle, WA)

I have a salt water chlorine generator.

I just opened my pool and looked inside the chlorine cell and there's alot of white crusty stuff.

What is that and how would I clean it out?

Thanks for your question Mitch

What you probably have is calcium build-up on your chlorine generator.

What I do with the YMCA cell is to first remove it from the line. Plug up one end of the cell.

If you don't have a plug you might be able to go to your local pool store and see if they have anything.

I try to get as much debris and calcium build-up out of the cell as I can using a soft bristle brush.

Then I mix water and muriatic acid, a 4:1 ratio, and pour that into the cell.

Allow that to sit for about 5 minutes, pour the acid out and rinse the cell with clean water.

Inspect inside the cell for any calcium build-up or debris and do the above again if necessary.

I do this once per month but you might only need to do it a couple of times during your swimming season.

Hope this help

Robert
