Shocking A Saltwater Pool

by Krista
(Scenery Hill, PA)

My pool is full of algae, but recently purchased and hooked up Intex Saltwater System.

If I shock the pool will it damage the saltwater system?

Thanks for the question Krista

I always tell both the visitors to my website and personal customers, when in doubt, call the manufacturer.

But, from personal experience, this is what I've done with the YMCA pool (80,000 gallon salt pool).

Whenever I need to shock the pool, I always turn off the chlorinator and I've never had a problem with it burning up or damages.

I put in between 23 - 25 lbs. of granular chlorine which bring the chlorine level up to around 20ppm.

This has never hurt the salt cell in any way and it still runs perfectly, but I always turn it off before shocking.

I would encourage you to check out these pages on salt pool and chlorine generators:

Salt Water Swimming Pools

Chlorine Generator

Look them over carefully because a salt pool is a little different than a normal chlorine pool in its testing and maintenance.

Here's a good post about the kind of salt that I personally use for the Y pool:

Which Salt To Use In A Salt Water Swimming Pool?

Hope this helps and have a fun and safe Summer.

Robert
