Skimmer Valves Open Or Closed?

I am unsure if this should remain open when the filter and pump are running or is that hole supposed to remain covered? My husband is deployed and I am trying to maintain the pool properly. Thank you for your help. Thanks for the question Mari I'm a Virginia boy myself. If you haven't been yet, north of Stafford is Prince William Forest Park and to the east is Widewater State Park. Great place to go. The plastic cover under the skimmer is more than likely the vacuum inlet. You'll want to keep this closed during normal filtering and open it when it comes time to vacuum. You should try to vacuum once a week, or after a bad windstorm or heavy rain. This site is to help you with your pool maintenance and I personally answer all questions.
