Starting New 27 ft. Swimming Pool

by Dennis Taylor
(Tyler, TX )

Question

I am just re-opening my 27 foot swimming pool.

It holds a little over 17,000 gallons.

What do I need to add to open my pool after I fill it with water?

What goes in first? Second? And so on...

Thanks for the question Dennis

Because of the scope of the question it would be time and space prohibitive for me to go into everything you need to do in order to get your pool up and running.

Not because it's too difficult, but because there's so many variables such as the readings of your fill water (high pH and low alkalinity, or vice versa, well water, high iron and copper, etc...)

Here are some good posts to start with:

Above Ground Pool..Need To Know About Chemicals & What To Do..

My First Pool..How Do I Add Chemicals & Make Adjustments?

New Pool - Is Shock Required?

What Is A Swimming Pool Conditioner & Stabilizer?

The short of it is this:

Get a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 test kit, not test strips.

Pool Water Testing

Water Testing Kit

Test the fill water for chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness.

This way you'll have a good starting point and know what you need to add.

The alkalinity might be fine but the pH is too high.

Shock with Dichlor to get some CYA (stabilizer) in the pool.

Be careful when using Dichlor as it can get out of hand quickly.

For every 10ppm of chlorine added with Dichlor, you'll raise the CYA by 9ppm.

Once you've done this and looked over the posts above, if you have a specific question about the pool opening, please feel free to contact me again.

Thanks for the question Heidi

First I would encourage you to get a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 test kit. It's the best and will give you the most accurate readings:

Pool Water Testing

Water Testing Kit

Next is to test your fill water to know where you stand:

Chlorine

CYA (cyanuric acid/stabilizer)

pH

Alkalinity

Calcium Hardness

It would really be time prohibitive for me to explain everything you need to do, from testing the pH level, chlorine, vacuuming, filtration, etc..

So, I'm going to give you the links to my web pages. You can go through them at your leisure. If you have any questions, please feel free to email back.

Installing Chemicals In The Proper Place

Help!! New Pool Owner And The Chemical Tests Are All Over The Place. What Should I Do?

My First Pool..How Do I Add Chemicals & Make Adjustments?

Above Ground Pool..Need To Know About Chemicals & What To Do..

As you can see other pool owners have the same questions as you do.

The links above will give you a good starting point.

There are so many variables in starting up a pool.

Sometimes fill water is low pH and high alkalinity, or vice versa.

Sometimes the hardness is 2ppm and in other places it might be 400ppm.

This is why testing your fill water is important.

Follow the advice of the links above and if you have a specific question about something, please contact me again.

Due to space and redundancy, I'm going to merge your post with the first one on the page, "Starting New 27 ft. Swimming Pool".
