Swimming Pool Algae With Baquacil Use

by Linda Finnerty
(Houston, TX)

Cannot get rid of pool algae using Baquacil products.

I have used the flock once and no luck. Water testing said sanitizer is high but flock should work after once or twice.

Any ideas short of draining the pool and switching to chlorine-based products?

Thanks for the question Linda

Unfortunately you're not going to find too many people on pool forums, this one included, that are fans of Baquacil products.

I don't have anything personal against the company or products, it's just that I've personally found the using Baquacil will eventually cost you more in the long run.

Their sales pitch is alot of the "no more chlorine smell".

This is true, but with the added expense of the products and the never ending use of it, not to mention you'll spend too much time fighting your pool than swimming, it's better to switch to a chlorine based pool.

Flocculation (or coagulation) is adding chemicals to the pool that bind tiny particles together into larger clumps. These clumps settle to the bottom where they can be filtered and/or vacuumed away.

Baquacil products might be good for the start of the season, maybe 1/2 way into it, but I know from personal experience, and from many of my customers, that it's just not worth it.

Not knowing how much you have in your pool, you may need to drain 1/3 - 1/2 of the pool water, refill, and start again.

It is unfortunate, but it will take some time and filtration to get the Baquacil out of the pool.
