Swimming Pool Chlorine Maintenance

by Bob H
(California)

How many 3 inch pucks of trichlor should I put in a floater in a 20,000 gallon concrete pool in order to maintain a proper chlorine level?

Thanks for the question Bob

There are many variable to consider such as usage, sun, heat, organics, filtration cycles and times, etc... that have an effect on chlorine consumption. A heavily used full-sun pool with lots of debris and very hot days will consume chlorine faster than a retired couple with a similar pool with rock landscaping.

Without knowing all of the parameters I can only guess how many would be needed for your pool. However, personal experience tells me that on average a 20,000 gallon pool would use about 2 - 4 tabs per week in the Summer with temperatures above 100 degrees and normal usage.

I hope this has answered your question to your satisfaction.

Chlorine Testing

I put chlorine tab in a floater about three days ago. I test water today and the tester showing up clear water.

Is the chlorine getting in pool?

Thanks for the question

The short answer would be yes the chlorine is getting into the pool. At what rate I cannot be sure. This is dependent on some factors such as usage, heat, sun, organics, splash out, filter cycles, temperature of the pool, etc...

Chlorine tabs are meant to slowly add chlorine to the pool through the week so the CL levels don't dip down to a dangerous level, below 1ppm. As the dissipate you need to add more to keep the CL level up.

I hope this has answered your question to your satisfaction.

Chlorine Tablets 3 Inch On The Bottom Of The Pool

by Kelly
(Tulsa, OK)

My husband said that because he could not smell the chlorine in our pool that it needed more.
I told him that everything was as it should be and not to mess with the pool. When I was not looking, he threw a 3 inch chlorine tab in the middle of the pool.

The pump has not been on for 2 days and now it's like concrete in the bottom of the pool. Our pool is a soft side easy set pool. What will happen to our pool without this being in a floater and what could happen to the bottom lining of our pool? How do I get this out without hurting my health. I am allergic to chlorine.

Thanks for the question Kelly

I'm going to tell you a quick story. Each year my kids private school has a fund raiser called "The Soup Invitational". This is where local restaurants can showcase their soups and other food. There's a small cover charge and another small fee for all the soup you can sample.

I was in charge of the fund raiser. While in the kitchen, I asked one of the helpers if the soup was ready. She put her hand on the pot and said "I think so". This irritated me because you can't tell if soup is hot enough or ready to go out without first tasting it. In other words, you need to test it.

It's the same with pool water. You can't look at pool water and think it's fine. That's what test kits are made for. After pool safety, testing the water is the 2nd most important thing a pool owner needs to do. I'd suggest getting a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 test kit.

Pool Water Testing

Water Testing Kit

Even with a small pool, the filter needs to run between 8 - 10 hours per day in the Summer. If you simply put the chlorine tablets in the pool and allow then to settle to the bottom, you're going to get a big bleach stain. If they're put in the same area over and over, it may start to eat a small hole through the bottom.

Chlorine tabs are very acidic. Acid eat through things. This is why I always recommend a tab floater. Simply put the tabs in the floater and toss the floater in the pool, and you're finished. And never put chlorine tabs in the skimmer. Tab floaters are very inexpensive, about $10 - $13. Try getting the tab out using a pool skimmer. You can have someone else do it or use rubber gloves and try it yourself.

Or have your husband do it. Regardless, the chlorine tablet needs to come out and the pool needs a tab floater. Hope this helps and have a fun and safe swimming season.

Can I Mix Chlorine Tablets?

Can you mix brands of chlorine tablets in your chlorinator?

The packaging says not to mix chemicals but says nothing about different brands.

Thanks for the question

To the best of my knowledge, as long as they're Trichlor tabs there shouldn't an issue with mixing different brands of chlorine tablets.

Most chlorine tabs are Trichlor pucks that are different sizes.

A 3" tablet is about 8 oz. and will raise the free chlorine level by 5.5 ppm and the cyanuric acid (CYA) by 3.3 ppm in a 10,000 gallon pool.

Chlorine Tablets

There's smaller 3 oz. 1" tablets and 1 oz. 1/2" tablets.

Remember that using Trichlor tablets will normally raise the CYA level in your pool so it needs to be tested weekly.

I have used for years and recommend a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 pool test kit.

Trichlor tabs are acidic (which may decrease your pH level) so you may need to use a use a pH Up product or sodium bicarb.

How Many Multifunctional Chlorine Tabs To Use Mini 20 g Tabs

by Anne Bennion
(Farnborough)

I have a lay z spa hot tub. Use to use granules but purchased tabs mini multifunctional tabs 20 g chlorine tabs. I have got a floater. Do I fill the whole filter up with tabs? Last time I used them I put 1 tab in and got no reading what am I doing wrong? My hot tub is for 4 people.

Thanks for the question Anne. First, we need to understand what's going on here and the role tabs play in a hot tub. Tabs are used to slowly dose the hot tub with chlorine to maintain a residual FC level. They're not good to get a huge initial dose of chlorine into the hot tub.

Next, chlorine breaks down quickly due to the increased temperature and high usage. It's for this reason that many hot tub owners prefer to use bromine as the sanitizer. But hot tubs that use bromine require a bromine bank. You can do an internet search for "bromine bank in hot tubs". There's tons of information available and a couple of ways of doing it that best serve your situation. If you want to go the chlorine route you'll need to balance the water, add stabilizer, and maintain a high enough FC level to kill the organic matter in the hot tub.

If you feel your situation is more complex than this, I do phone and/or SKYPE consultations. It makes things go much faster and many people have found it extremely beneficial, saving them time and money in the long run. All your questions will be answered. I have no chemicals to sell you so you know I'm not bias. If you purchase a personal phone consult you'll get all 3 eBooks for free.

Endless Pool Chemistry Issues

by Vicki Bonanno
(Santa Fe, NM)

I take care of a small endless pool that is kept @ 93 degrees, is indoors & has only 1 user. For the first 2 years I used only Clorox, about 3 cups after each of the owners swims. That worked fine until Chloror seemed to start coming with a foaming age for something in it. I switched to 1" tabs . Now I get endless amounts of gritty fall out dusting every surface & slightly cloudy water. I am on a well with very hard water. My client is a cancer survived & will not tolerate bromine & only extremely low amounts of chlorine. I have tried lowering the ph with spa down & would have to dump an ocean of chemistry in to stay in front of the curve. Way too expensive! The pure well water is wonderful until you start monkeying with it, But does need sanitizing.

Number Of Chlorine Pucks

by Pauline
(Maricopa AZ)

I see the chart for the number of chlorine pucks. But is there a corresponding chart to go along with temperature. Because in the winter (in Phoenix area) we may use one puck. When do I start increasing the pucks?

Sure I will know when I test it, but I want to have a general guideline to tell my neighbor when he's watching the pool. It's a 12,000 gallon pool. And we are seasonal,so it isn't used for a month or two at a time. Thank you.

Hi Pauline. I had my pool route in the Mesa/Tempe area so I know exactly what you're talking about. This is what I've experienced.

For your size pool you'd use 1 tab during the off season, as you mentioned. During the hot months, starting in May - September, you'll probably go through 3 tabs per week while running the pump 12 hours per day. Just be mindful of the CYA. Once it starts getting to 70ppm or above you'll need to think about a partial drain and refill.

Be sure to keep a good supply of liquid chlorine on hand as the water temps can reach into the 90s.

Pool Problem With Tablets

by Wayne
(Spain)

My pool holds 144,000 litres. How many tablets should be in there please, and why do pool men all want to put them in the skimmers? The pool is not clear, and he is struggling to get it that way.

Hi Wayne. For your size pool, on average, you might be going through 4 - 5 tabs per week. This is a good baseline but your actual use can depend upon pool usage, rain, heat, sun, topping off the pool, etc... Tabs are meant to dissolve and release 1ppm FC per day.

People like to put tabs in the skimmer because it's convenient and they probably don't know any better. There are tab floats and feeders that should be used. I've made a video on YouTube about this very issue. Tell your guys to get a tab float and use it to save your equipment.
