Use Of Clorox In Rubber Above Ground Pools

by Diane Lynch
(Red Bank, NJ)

Is clorox an appropriate product to remove algae from a rubber pool?

Thanks for the question Diane

Clorox is nothing more than watered down pool chlorine...Sodium Hypochlorite...and has been used to sanitize pools for years.

I would suggest diluting the Clorox with water, maybe a 4:1 ratio for removing algae from a rubber pool. An old toothbrush and scouring pad should do the job. I've had to do this a couple of times on the YMCA pool deck and it works pretty well, but I used regular chlorine.

If the diluted Clorox is not strong enough add a little more to the mixture.

Pouring or spraying it straight on without first diluting it might cause burn marks and possible damage to the pool.

Small kiddie or plastic pools are different. You can spray straight bleach on them.

I've also heard that vinegar, not diluted, sprayed straight on is good for killing algae and mold. I've never tried it on a swimming pool but it's worth a shot.

Remember to wear old clothes, goggles, and rubber gloves.

Rinse the pool out very well when you're finished.

Hope this helps and good luck

Robert
