Water Emptying Out Of My Pool Through Sewer Drain At All Settings...

(El Paso, TX)

Question

Why is the water draining out of my pool into the sewer when I have the settings to vacuum and even to filter?

Are there other valves I should worry about when filtering, ex. drain, vacuum and/or skimmer valves?

Thanks for the question

A leak can be the most frustrating thing a pool owner can have, so here's what you can do.

I will assume you have an inground pool being that you're in Texas.

The question didn't mention any wet spots around the pool or filtration, so we'll go right to the pool itself.

These are a few simple techniques on troubleshooting a leaking pool.

Mark the water level at the skimmer. You can use a piece of tape or a grease pencil.

Check the water level in 24 hours. Your pool shouldn't lose any more than 1/4" of water per day.

Anything more and you probably have a leak.

This test needs to be performed with the pump on, then off, each time for the period of 24 hours.

Now comes to fun part. This is where you find the location of the leak.

Remember that vinyl liner pools need water in them at all times. If you have a vinyl liner and the pool water drops rapidly, you need to call a leak detection business immediately.

If the water drops below the skimmer and stops, more than likely the leak is probably in the skimmer, filtration system, or filtration piping.

If the water stops at the light, it's probably the light housing.

If it drops below the light, and maybe keeps going, there may be a leak in the drain at the bottom the pool.

If there are air bubbles going back into the pool through the returns, there's a leak in the suction side of the filtration system.

One of the most common leaks is a separation or crack between the plastic skimmer and the concrete pool.

This can be fixed with pool putty.

Pool plumbing can be a constant source for water loss. Old or worn out pipe material, age, and ground conditions are the most common.

You should have valves for the bottom drain and skimmer(s). Check around the ground. Is it wet?

This could be the source and is easily repaired.

If the ground around the pool and filtration system is dry and you done the above, it's probably time to call in a leak detection company.

Average cost for them could be between $175 - $250, repairs not included.

Hope this helps and good luck with your pool.

New Question: Sand Filter Leaking From The Backwash Hose

By: Chris
Date: June 16, 2011
From: Texas

I vacuumed pool, backwashed and rinsed.

I put it back on filter mode, turned off, and left for the day.

I came back and the water had drained out of pool to botttom of skimmer and had slow leakage out of backwash hose.

What's the problem?

Remember, filter was turned off and set back on filter mode.

Thanks for the question Chris
