Ways Of Lowering Pool Total Alkalinity..Maintain pH Level

by Rob
(Billings, Montana)

Currently, my pool has slightly elevated pH levels (about 7.8, so not out of range--but could be slightly lower). My total alkalinity, however, was off the charts--at 280. Now it is 210. My problem, of course, is that while acid lowers the Alkalinity and pH levels, in order to bring pH back up to the 7.5-7.6 range, I need soda ash, which also increases the total alkalinity?

My guess is a back and forth game that will slowly bring my total alkalinity level down, while balancing my swimming pool pH level.

Any specific suggestions?

Thanks for your question Rob

This is an issue that many pool owners have; raising or lowering the pool pH level or total alkalinity while not doing something to the other side.

You can use these link to help in your situation:

To lower the pool total alkalinity you'll want to used muriatic acid and keep the pump motor off.

To lower the swimming pool pH levels use acid but turn on the pump motor along with any water features you might have; slides, water fountains, etc...

You also can use 20 Mule Team Borax or Sodium Bicarbonate, baking soda, to increase the pH level without much happening to the alkalinity.

Just use the above links and you'll be fine. You'll also find a chart for how much muriatic acid you need to decrease both the pool pH level and total alkalinity.

Have a Great Summer
