What Is Super Shock..Chlorinating..

by BJ

Is super shock and chlorinating the same thing?

Thanks for the question

Super shocking and super chlorinating are the same thing, just different words.

This is when the pool chlorine is brought up 10Xs higher.

When I do a pool shock at the YMCA, I always shoot for the the maximum, and then a little bit extra. Normally I want to get the pool chlorine to at least 15ppm to ensure the bacteria and chloramines are being burned off.

I allow for 2 complete turn-overs of the pool water, then I re-balance the water. I don't have time for the chlorine to come down on its own so I use a product called Thiosulphate, which is nothing more than a pool chlorine neutralizer.

When shocking a pool it is essential that you reach this level. You might even hear it called "break-point chlorination". It all means the same thing; getting the pool chlorine level up 10Xs from the normal chlorine level of 1.5ppm - 3.5ppm.

Best of luck with your pool
