What's The Best Way To Add Calcium Hypochlorite..Swimming Pool Chlorine

by Ed

I have an above ground vinyl pool and recently bought 40 lbs of calcium hypochlorite powder.

What is the best way of getting it in the pool?

I was told that the white solid in the bottom of the liner that I get is going to produce little holes in the liner.

Do I need to dissolve the powder in a pail first and then pour in the top layer of liquid into the pool?

Please suggest a good way of using the powder Ca(OCl)2

Ed

Thanks for your question Ed

You've made a good choice in using calcium hypochlorite. I've been using it for years with much success.

One word of caution: be sure to check the hardness of your fill water.

If your fill water hardness is around 150ppm - 200ppm, I would recommend liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) as the cal. hypo. might increase the hardness of the pool water.

If you have soft fill water, then use the cal. hypo.

Use a Taylor Reagent FAS-DPD K-2006 pool water test kit. They're the best on the market.

Water Testing Kit

The white particles you will find on the bottom of the pool after using granular chlorine is the calcium.

This binds the chlorine together.

For vinyl pools, I suggest getting a bucket (maybe 5 gallons) 1/2 full with pool water, then add the granular chlorine.

Always add the chemical to the water, never the other way around. You can get a 3 - 4 foot piece of PVC pipe from Lowe's or Home Depot to use as a stir stick.

Mix the chlorine with the pool water and walk it around the perimeter of the pool with the filtration "ON".

Try to make any pool chemical corrections at night and allow to circulate.

You may want to use old clothes because the chlorine will bleach anything it contacts.

You can also give your pool a good brushing after adding the pool chlorine as this will help with the mixing.

Test the pool chlorine level after 1 full turn-over of the water, about 10 - 12 hours, then make another adjustment if needed.

Hope this helps and have a great Summer

Robert
