When Do You Know It's Time To Replace The Sand In The Filters?

by Jonathan
(Ireland)

This week I have noticed while hoovering the swimming pool there is alot of sand at the bottom of the pool (this has never happened before).

I checked the sand when I got out of the pool and it happens to be the course sand from the filters.

The pool filters are a little over 3 years in operation.

I'm wondering would it be time to replace the sand in the filters or replace the filters?

Thanks for the question Jonathan

There are several reasons why you could be getting sand in the bottom of the pool.

Normally sand gets put back into the pool through the returns.

Here are some good posts about this issue:

Sand In Pool After Changing The Filter

Do I Have Sand Filter Or Pump Problems?

Change The Sand In Above Ground Pool Sand Filters

These next two are very good:

Why Is Sand Going Back Into The Pool After Backwashing?

How Do I Stop Sand Going Back Into The Pool..Pool Keeps Getting Dirty..

The above posts talk about (and go into great detail) the most common reasons for sand going back into the pool:

1. Broken lateral and/or diffuser

2. Channeling

3. New sand

4. Old sand

5. Not doing the RINSE after back washing

Sand, with good maintenance, can normally last anywhere from 5 - 10 years.

Before you change your sand or spend money on a new filter, look over the posts above.
