Why Do I Have A Leaking Filter?
by Stephanie

I have a sand filter that is leaking a good amount of water.
We have replaced the O ring and tightened the plastic piece that keeps the dial on top but we are still leaking water.
It goes below the skimmer level everyday. Please help before I divorce over a pool.
Thanks for the question Stephanie
First I'd like to ask if the actual filter is leaking, or is the pool losing water? If the filter is leaking you would have water on the ground and around the filter.
Is this the problem?
Is the water coming out of the back wash hose? If so, you can go these posts for the answer:

Next is to troubleshoot why your pool is losing water.
Sand Filter Draining When In "Filter" Position
Mark the water level at the skimmer. You can use a piece of tape or a grease pencil. Check the water level in 24 hours.
Your pool shouldn't lose any more than 1/4" of water per day.
Anything more and you probably have a leak. This test needs to be performed with the pump on, then off, each time for the period of 24 hours.
If the water drops below the skimmer and stops, more than likely the leak is probably in the skimmer, filtration system, or filtration piping.
If it drops below the light, and maybe keeps going, there may be a leak in the drain at the bottom the pool. If the water stops at the light, it's probably the light housing.
If there are air bubbles going back into the pool through the returns, there's a leak in the suction side of the filtration system.
One of the most common leaks is a separation or crack between the plastic skimmer and the concrete pool.
This can be fixed with pool putty.
Here's a good post about how to troubleshoot a leaking pool:

Try the tips above for the filter and testing to see if you're losing water from a leak and let me know how it turns out for you.
Hope this helps and have a great Summer.

Thank you for your response. We have a Waterway sand filter. It is leaking right at the split nut.
We have replaced and lubed the new o ring but we still have a massive leak. Do you think, replacing the split nut would repair this leak?

You can replace the plastic split nut. For Waterway, it attaches the valve to the filter tank.
If the leak is there, then replacing the nut would more than likely stop the leak.
Good luck with it and keep me informed.
