Why Do I Have Low pH Pool Level & No Free Chlorine In My Swimming Pool

by Michelle

We have an in-ground pool 25,000 gallons and have been having difficulty keeping the pH and total alkalinity up.

Of course with these low levels we also are showing no free chlorine.

Tonight I am going to add 5# of alkalinity up.

How soon after that can I add some liquid chlorine, or should I get the pH and alkalinity adjusted correctly before adding chlorine?

Thanks

I find this site very informative.

Thanks for the question Michelle

The question didn't mention what there readings were for the pH and alkalinity levels, so I can only assume.

First, you can go to these links to learn how to get the pH and total alkalinity in the correct range.

Swimming Pool pH Levels

Swimming Pool Alkalinity

You can start by adding the sodium bicarbonate which will increase both the pH and alkalinity. Once they're both a little higher, decrease the pH by using muriatic acid using the method in the link above.

Then repeat the process again until the pH is between 7.6ppm - 7.8ppm and alkalinity if between 80ppm - 100ppm.

Next is to hit the chlorine level.

Adjust Your Swimming Pool Chlorine

You need to get the cyanuric acid level up. this is the stabilizer for your chlorine and should be between 30ppm - 50ppm.

Chlorine Tablets

Get a Taylor Reagent FAS-DPD K-2006 pool water test kit.

Water Testing Kit

After adding any pool chemicals, you'll need to wait for one full turn-over of the water and re-test before making another adjustment.

This is when all the pool water has been filtered and returned back into the pool. Normally it's about 10 - 12 hours.

Have a great Summer
