Why Is The Chlorine Gone Overnight

by Eddie
(Rouses Point, NY)

I am new to pool maintenance.

I have shocked my pool multiple times in the last week.

My pool was dark green and now it is a very light milky green.

I add chlorine in the morning, check the level multiple times throughout the day and it stays the same.

When I get up the next morning the chlorine level is non existent.

I have added stabilizer and nothing seems to clear the pool and keep the chlorine level stable.

What can I do?

Chlorine 5ppm in the afternoon/zero in the morning

pH 7.8

Sand filter

I am going to get a test kit to test for alk, cya, and harness soon.

Thanks for the question Eddie

It's a good move to get a pool test kit soon.

I would encourage you to get a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 kit. It's the best and will give you the most accurate readings.

Pool Water Testing

Water Testing Kit

First, I'd like to have your complete chemicals readings:

Chlorine

CYA (cyanuric acid/stabilizer)

pH

Alkalinity

Calcium Hardness

Metals (iron and copper)

Total Dissolved Solids

It makes troubleshooting much easier and the process of clearing up your pool will go much faster.

You can get this done at your local pool store.

Without these numbers I'm just guessing at what the problem is.

If you can, take a sample of pool water to your local pool store for analysis.

Many times it's the CYA and chlorine that aren't matching up.

You can have very high CYA, say 100, but the chlorine needs to come up in proportion to the CYA.

Your pH is good for right now so don't touch that.

I'm not going to say that clearing up a green pool is easy, but it makes it more manageable when you know exactly what the readings are.

The sooner you can get me those the easier it will be to get your pooled cleared up quickly and with the least amount of money out of your pocket.

Here's a good post of someone who gave very good readings:

And here's another post from a pool owner who I recently helped:

Hope to hear from you soon with these readings.
