Will A Salt System Help With Chlorene Sensitivity?

by Dave

My wife is cholrene sensitive.

Our pool is well maintained and always clean and balanced.

Will a salt system help with her chlorene sensitivity, or is the chlorene generated the same as the 3" tabs we use now?

Thanks for the question Dave

A salt water pool is not a chlorine free pool. A chlorine generator (salt cell) still produces chlorine, or hypochlorus acid.

This is what sanitizes the pool.

There are really only 2 benefits to having a salt pool.

The water feels better because it is softer. This is if you add salt to the pool.

There are free standing chlorine generators. You add a small amount of salt, it produces the chlorine, and that gets put into the pool through the returns.

Technically this isn't a salt pool but one that uses salt to produce chlorine.

2nd is the convenience of not having to add chlorine to the pool on a weekly basis.

It's made throughout the week so you'll always have a constant flow of chlorine into the pool.

The 3" chlorine tabs are a mixture of chlorine and stabilizer (CYA). There is no salt in these tabs.

Some people that I know have had great success with a salt pool.

I'm the pool operator for our YMCA (80,000 gallon salt pool) and they say it's great to swim in a salt pol.

Other people say it doesn't make a difference. It really has to go on a case-by-case basis.

I can't say with any degree of certainty that switching over to a salt pool will help your wife with her chlorine allergy.

I would encourage you to maybe find a local salt pool and try it out before switching your pool over.

Hope this helps and have a fun and safe Summer.

Robert
