Will My Hair Change Color If I Swim In A Chlorine Swimming Pool..Different

by Jenny
(Miami, FL)

I just dyed my hair (it looks so cute) this week and I really want to go swimming but I don't know what to do. My friend said not to go swimming because the pool chlorine will bleach out the color.

Will my hair change color or will I get a different hair color if I go swimming?

Thanks for your question Jenny

There is a common myth that pool chlorine might bleach hair. While it is possible that if you swim in a pool with a very excessive amount of chlorine in it, there might be a hair or skin reaction.

Normal residential chlorine pools that are kept between 1.5ppm - 3.5ppm are safe for swimming. Commercial pool chlorine level should be between 3.5ppm - 4.5ppm.

The time when hair turns another color after swimming is from blond to green. This happens because of the high metal content in the water, normally copper and iron, and not from the swimming pool chlorine. Many times pool owners with well water will have this happen to them.

I hope this clears it up for you

Robert
