Your Opinion About Our New Pool
by Josee
(Ontario, Canada)
We are thinking strongly on getting in inground pool. We got a quote for a 18x36 humpback kidney. It includes: Liner, skimmer, 2 returns, salt chlorination (catridge filter), half force triStar pump, heater, 2 LED lights, 3 step ladder (6'), accessories, shock chemicals, 3' Deck, installation, rogh in for water feature. The pool is from Canswim and the equipment is from Hayward. The quote is $37,290. We have to pay for the electricity, gas, landscaping, water, permits and fence What do you think? Thanks for the question Josee
As you know having a pool is great and you're contacting people to get differing options which is wonderful.
An 18 X 36 pool holds between 17,000 - 26,000 gallons, depending on the depth. This is a good middle of the road pool for someone who wants a nice pool, maybe have some friends over for a swim party and a cook-out.
I would personally rethink the vinyl liner. Although they have many nice designs and custom features, to me, they're not worth the hassle.

There are pros and cons for each kind of pool. One of my favorites is Pebble Tec. This rates between a plaster and fiberglass pool.
You can get it in any shape that you want (like plaster) and is pretty good on chemicals (like fiberglass).
Plaster pools are the most common, but you'll use more chemicals. And if you don't keep the hardness level up you going to get pitting.
This is when the water rips chunks of plaster from the pool walls and floor.
Fiberglass is good on chemicals but your limited to sizes and shapes. There are many, but having a "custom" pool might be difficult.
If possible, I'd get 2 skimmers.
A salt pool is not a chlorine free pool. You're still producing chlorine. Also, there's a slight difference in a salt pool and a regular chlorine pool.

Really look over these pages.
Many pool owners are unaware of the differences between a salt and chlorine pool.
This is my experience with salt pools from having a pool route in Arizona for years, along with being the YMCA pool operator since 2008 (80,000 gallon salt pool).
You can't have decorative rock like Flagstone because the salt might eat away at it so be sure you getting the right decking.
Hayward TriStar pumps are good. You may want to look into variable speed pumps. These kinds of pumps use less energy. You have lower speeds for normal filtering and higher speeds for back washing.
Absolutely get an oversized cartridge filter (not the pool pump, but filter). Sand and DE filters are too much trouble.
Cartridges rate between sand and DE. You'll use less water because there's no back washing. Simply take out the old filter and put in clean ones. Clean the old and replace when the others get dirty. Very simple.
Don't go any larger than a 1HP pump motor. Don't let them sell you on "bigger is better".
You want the right pump for the job, but going too big on the motor and the water will rush through the system too fast possibly tearing the cartridges.
$37,000 for a pool this size is right in there. Be careful and get everything in writing. Here are some other pages to look over:

"Shock" chemicals would need a little clarification. Look over this post:

The biggest thing is to understand that a pool is like a living organism; each part is separate, but makes up the whole.
I don't want to sound "foo-foo" but it's true. Know how each smaller part works together with the other parts and you're well on your way to having a great pool.
And I'm always here to answer your questions.
Hope this helps and have a great Summer.
