Yuk..Put In Chlorine & Water Turned Brown

by Robin
(Illinois)

As advised after filling pool (6500 gallon capacity) I shocked it with 2 gallons of liquid shock.

The nearly clear pool turned brown immediately.

I was then informed that I shoul have been running the pump while adding chemicals so the pump is now running.

Any suggestions on what to add next?

Any floating debris is being pumped out but it's still brown.

After testing the water I see the chlorine is high as is the alkalinity.

Stabilizer is in the normal range and the pH is high.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks for the question Robin

First, I'd like to have your complete chemicals readings:

Chlorine

CYA (cyanuric acid/stabilizer)

pH

Alkalinity

Calcium Hardness

Metals (iron and copper)

Total Dissolved Solids

It makes troubleshooting much easier and the process of clearing up your pool will go much faster.

You can get this done at your local pool store.

Without these numbers I'm just guessing at what the problem is.

My apologies, but I can't do anything with a reading of "high" or "normal range". It means different things to different pool owners.

I'd advise you to get a Taylor FAS-DPD K-2006 pool test kit.

Here's a question I just answered regarding brown and rusty colored water:

Salt Water Pool With High Chlorine & Rust Colored Water

It's a salt pool but you'd treat it just the same.

Normally right after chlorination if the water turns brown or a rusty color, it's an iron problem. Copper will turn things green.

That's why getting the metals tested and having the readings are important.

Chlorine, from my understanding, will not cause the water to become cloudy, it will only show the metals already present in the water.

Read my comment about water turning brown after chlorinating the pool on the above post. It also explains in detail how to get CYA into your pool and how to shock it.
