Zeosand Putting Sand Back Into The Pool
by Eric
(New Jersey)
I have a Hayward s180t sand filter that was blowing the sand back into the pool and not a little but a lot.
I installed a new center pipe and laterals and put Zeosand in.
I backwashed, rinsed, and ran the filter for about 8 hours. I have sand again.
I am lost what to do besides spend the money for a DE filter. Please help.
Thanks
Thanks for the question Eric
I'd first direct your attention to this post about a similar issue:
Debris At Bottom Of Pool With Sand Filter Using Zeobrite
That has 2 pages of info. that will be helpful about Zeosand.
Zeosand, or Zeobrite sand is pretty new on the scene, compared to regular pool sand that has been around for decades.
With any new sand you're going to have a settling in period. This is when the sand becomes wet and starts to fill with debris.
All new sand, regardless of the kind, will have residual dirt and debris in it and there's nothing you can do.
It will take some time for the Zeosand to settle down and pack into the filter.
When I changed the sand in the YMCA filters, I had to vacuum twice a week for a couple of weeks before the sand settled in.
After that I checked the filter media to be sure it was at the correct height.
This is known as "freeboard" and is the measurement from the top of the tank to the sand.
You can call the sand filter manufacturer and get the correct measurements. It may be different with Zeosand so ask about that.
Keep filtering and allow the sand to build up a little pressure and dirt.
This is when they're most effective. And back wash when the pressure get 8 - 10psi over your "just back washed" pressure.
If you didn't break any laterals or the standpipe, then just allow the filter sand to break in a bit.
Each pool filter is different, but an educated guess would be about 5 - 7 days.
Hope this helps and let me know how it turns out for you.
Have a great Summer.
