Question on Diverter and Pump
by: sam

I accidentally left my diverter valve (Jandy) in the closed position, which basically dead headed my pump. The pump ran for at least 6 hours before i noticed it.

Now I have air bubbles coming from the pool jets. I can see water dripping from the inlet pipe on the front of the pump and also from the exhaust/return line. I'm going to fix these leaks, but I'm wondering if I caused serious damage to the pump. It's a Hayward 1hp, I'm not sure of the model, but it has a square primer basket in the front of it.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the question Sam

When water is not flowing correctly these pumps motors can heat up very quickly. They normally run warm anyway, but when water is restricted they get very hot, sometimes enough to melt or warp the pipes.

There's a good chance that one or more of the following has melted or been warped inside the pump motor:

- Diffuser gasket and/or diffuser
- Impeller
- Seal assembly and/or housing gasket
- Seal plate
- Motor mounting plate

When this happens the motor can't draw water correctly and causes it to cavitate. Being there's not a good flow of water and air is being drawn in, you're going to get air back into the pool via the returns.

If you're familiar with working on pumps you might be able to salvage it and replace any warped or broken parts. Without actually being there I can't say what parts you'll need or identify the parts that have been affected. Maybe your local pool store has motor repair, and if not, you may need to purchase another motor.

If you would like personal assistance, I do phone consultations for a donation of your choice. It makes things go much faster. If you choose to not go that route, we can correspond by email.

Hope this helps and good luck with the pump motor.
