Green Baquacil Pool Water Prevention & Treatment

I have read your article "Green Pool Water" and appreciate the thoroughness of your advice, however we have Baquacil in our pool and would like to read an article on Baquacil Green Pool Water if you have one.

My pump is out and our water is beginning to turn green so I know I am going to have a problem when I get our filtration system rebuilt and new sand in our filter. So, I am looking to learn:

1)What I can put in our pool now to slow or kill the green algea, and/or 2) what action and chemicals do I need to use and do when I get the filter system back up and running properly?

Thanks for the question Al

Unfortunately there's really no easy way to go from a Baquacil pool and clear it up with chlorine and then go back to a Baqua pool again. You're dealing with 2 different compounds. Biquanide is a non bleach/halogenic product and the main ingredient for oxidizing is hydrogen peroxide. The issue with this is waste builds up in the pool water over time. Chlorine is sodium hypochlorite which is bleach.

You can't simply shock the pool with chlorine to kill the algae because much of it will be eaten up by the Baquacil and not go to the algae. Even on Baquacil's own website it says the pool owner will probably have an issue with algae.

To use BAQUACIL Swimming Pool Sanitizer which is POLYAMINOPROPYL BIGUANIDE according to its own MSDS form.

You're going to need to keep the FC at 15ppm for a period of time until the chlorine overrides the Baquacil. At that point you'll need to shock again to kill the algae. Also without a working filter it's virtually impossible to circulate the water in order to kill any algae or keep it from spreading even further.

Honestly, the best thing to do is when you get your filtration system up and running again is to switch to a chlorine pool. It's much easier and less expensive than Baquacil.

Concerning your 2nd question if you choose to stay with Baqua products then you need to stay with their recommendations found on their site. Add BAQUACIL Swimming Pool Sanitizer and Algistat to the pool to achieve a 50 ppm level. Add the start-up dose of BAQUACIL® Oxidizer in front of skimmer. Add the start-up dose of BAQUACIL® CDX™ Product directly into skimmer.
